The former imperial palace, a monument of national importance and one of the most important secular buildings in southern Germany from the 14th century, is located in the heart of Forchheim's historic town centre. In addition to the outstanding late Gothic wall paintings, the castle also houses the Upper Franconian Archaeological Museum. Over 600 masterpieces from prehistoric times onwards, cult objects, weapons and jewellery bear witness to the cultural wealth of the region, from the Stone Age to the dawn of modern times.
Interactive zones, models and virtual animations convey the Franconian past to visitors. Educational museum programmes and activity days complete the programme. The Imperial Palace is the central starting point for archaeological excursions in the Upper Franconian region.
