karl valentin and the old knights

The themes of knights and the Middle Ages accompanied the Munich comedian Karl Valentin throughout his life. He is particularly associated with Grünwald Castle: sketches and an entire theatre play "Ritter Unkenstein" are set there as well as the classic song "Ja so war'ns die oidn Rittersleut". From 1941 to 1943 he also lived in the castle hotel that still stands next to the castle today.

Karl Valentin's youth was strongly characterised by his surroundings' emphasis on the military and soldiering. It manifested itself in marches, marching bands and military music. This changed very little throughout his life, despite two world wars. Valentin longed for the "good old days": the cosy 19th century in Munich with references to the Middle Ages, which played a major role in the Bavaria of the German Empire. It was also clear to him that this was a projection in the face of a rapidly growing city and the changes that came along with that.
